This portion of scripture in the 6th chapter of the Gospel of John just follows the feeding of the 5000 men. The bible doesn't mention how many women and children were there. But you know there were both because the Lord used a boy's lunch to feed the multitude. Many had followed Jesus and his disciples across the Sea of Galilee the following day where this discourse took place. Jesus was debating with the Jews that the reason they were here was due to the fact they had been fed. So he starts to reveal to them who He is!

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life. I am that bread of life.

Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.
The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat?
Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him. As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me. This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.

From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away? Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.(KJV)

This was a hard saying as it is recorded in the scripture and many of those who followed Him across the sea left and followed Him no more. They too were called disciples which simply means 'students', as Jesus was considered a teacher. Jesus was revealing Himself as the Bread of Life! And when we take the bread of communion we are recognizing (discerning) that Jesus gave us His body for our very lives. By His stripes and bruises we are healed. He is saying that when we BELIEVE that and REMEMBER Him; He will dwell in us and we will dwell in Him. He is telling us that our LIFE will be in Him and that our Covenant relationship is in His Blood. As often as we observe communion we are calling Him into rememberance of this arrangement. And as this entire discourse started with the observation of the manna that was provided in the wilderness almost every day (they were allowed to gather twice as much on Friday so that they could observe the Sabbath rest on Saturday)I believe that we can observe communion in our homes every day as a means to provide for our welfare against the things that are coming upon this earth.

Even when Jesus taught His disciples to pray... He said, "give us this day our DAILY Bread, and forgive us our debts..." I don't think He was directing them to be concerned about "3 squares a day". Not many of us miss meal time. I believe He was referring to communion as He mentions bread and forgiveness... the body, broken for us and the blood shed for the forgiveness of sin. It's a recurring theme the Bread and the Cup throughout the ages. Everything in the Old Testament points to the cross, and everything in the New Testament looks back! No detail is left out. Even Jesus' birth place, Bethlehem... Bethlehem means 'house of bread'. Jesus the Bread of Life! Isn't God and His Word just fascinating!
